The British government this Sunday urged Northern Ireland parties to: form an autonomous power-sharing government as soon as possible so that the problems in that province can be dealt with urgently.

Northern Ireland Minister Brandon Lewis named the second most voted formation in Thursday’s election, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to nominate a candidate for Deputy Prime Minister for the Northern Ireland government to resume its activities.

Elections have won for the first time in history to the nationalist party Sinn Féinformer political branch of the dormant IRA, which according to the Good Friday Agreement (1998) should lead a power-sharing executive.

However, DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has insisted that his formation will not enter the government until the Northern Ireland Protocol between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The DUP rejects the controversial protocol for the region, designed by London and Brussels to assess goods arriving from Britain and prevent the uncontrolled import of products into the European Community market, while a hard border between the two Irelands, the key to the peace process, is prevented .

“Jeffrey (Donaldson), the DUP and all parties in the Stormont meeting must come together to come back and resolve Northern Ireland’s domestic problems,” the minister told the BBC.

Lewis has said the Conservative government is “not ruling out any option” on the Brexit protocol, though he has advocated finding an agreement with the EU for its amendment.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Sinn Féin’s victory, with… 27 chairs of the 90is “significant”, although he recalled that union members still make up the majority in the provincial legislature.

Similarly, he has for the time being ruled out opening a debate on a referendum for the reunification of the islandSinn Féin’s ultimate goal, as in his opinion the conditions for holding that consultation have not yet been met.

The minister plans to meet with leaders of the parties represented in the Northern Ireland Assembly on Monday to initiate dialogue to resume government formation.

Northern Ireland no manager since the DUP removed Chief Minister Paul Givan and toppled the government in February in protest of protocol.
