Nearly 18,000 homes were flooded during Russia’s devastating spring floods. Another 1,700 were added within a day. Particularly affected were the areas of Orenburg in the south of the Ural Mountains and Kurgan in Siberia, where the flood continued to spread.
In the regional capital of the same name, Kurgan, the Tobol River rose by almost one and a half meters in one day. The responsible minister of disaster protection, Alexander Kurenkov, reported again to President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday evening. Accordingly, unprecedented levels of flooding should be expected in the Kurgan region.
1500 people brought to safety
The situation in the Siberian region of Tyumen is also worrying, the minister said. There, the water level of the Tobol and Ishim rivers is rising rapidly, threatening to inundate 94 towns with 34,000 inhabitants. About 1,500 people were brought to safety from threatened areas in the Tyumen region on Thursday.
Many have lost all their belongings
After a winter of snow and lots of rain, spring floods are unusually heavy in parts of Russia. Tens of thousands of people have already lost their belongings.
Residents of the affected regions complain that authorities have ignored the looming danger for a long time. Protective measures were taken too late.
Floods also in Kazakhstan
In the neighboring Central Asian state of Kazakhstan, the floods are of similar magnitude. However, the evacuation of threatened areas started earlier there. More than 100,000 people were brought to safety by the flood.
