This new report has analyzed the versions Johnson has given to the House and has concluded that not only was he not telling the truth, he was knowingly doing so. The former Conservative prime minister described the report as “nonsense and a lie”.
The parliamentary committee who has investigated former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s versions of the parties staged in Downing Street during a pandemic – known as Party Gate— concluded that the former leader Tory lied “willfully and knowingly” to the House of Commons on several occasions.
The Privileges Commission opened its own investigation in June 2022 into a scandal that had already led to reprimands from both the police and an independent government-commissioned report that revealed that Johnson and his team had violated applicable laws and regulations.
This new audit has focused specifically on the versions offered by Johnson before parliament, to determine whether he misled the deputies, even if unknowingly. The committee, headed by Labor Harriet Harman, concluded not only that he was not telling the truth, but that he did it on purposesomething Johnson himself had always denied, according to the BBC.
The report also suggests that the former Conservative leader is torn up of the House of Representatives for three monthsalthough the conclusions come days after the former prime minister stepped down as deputy (he did so last Friday), a move he took when he received the first drafts.
On his way out, Johnson lashed out at the committee, calling it biased and berating that all he wanted to do was kick him out of the House of Commons. Now the group led by Harman also finds that he has been guilty of “harassment” in his attempts to defend himself.
Johnson: “That’s nonsense, a lie”
The former Conservative leader was not slow to react, describing the report as “garbage”. “It’s a terrible day for deputies and democracy,” he added.
“The committee says that I deliberately misled the House and that during my speech I knowingly withheld my knowledge of wrongdoings from the House. That is nonsense. It is a lie. To reach this wild conclusion, the committee must make a series of statements. of things that are absurd or contradicted by the facts,” Johnson said.
In a statement, the former head of the Conservative government considers today “a terrifying day for deputies and democracy” and has assured no MP is “safe from a vendetta”.
