Serious industrial accident at Voest in Linz. A 17-year-old student was supposed to be cleaning a shaft when the girl fell 20 feet and was seriously injured.
The accident in the Upper Austrian company happened around 4:25 p.m. on Thursday. A 17-year-old from Pucking fell about six meters while cleaning a pipe shaft by stepping on a fire-resistant layer (insulation layer) and was seriously injured.
Insulation collapsed
Because there had been a fire in the hall shortly before, the shaft had to be cleaned. The footboards above the axle have been removed for this purpose. Due to the pollution caused by the fire, it was not possible to see that there was a loose insulating layer under the diamond plate. It collapsed when the 17-year-old appeared and the girl fell into the hydraulic chamber below. After first aid, she was taken to a hospital in Linz by the emergency doctor.
