The neonatal ward of the hospital in Riverside, Virginia, is urgently looking for temporary workers. Twelve nurses are pregnant.
Can pregnancy be contagious? Of course not. But that’s exactly the impression you might get when you visit the baby station at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Virginia, USA. There, twelve employees of the same department became pregnant almost at the same time: there are ten nurses, a student nurse and a secretary from the care center for premature babies.
It is the first child for five of them. Speaking on the Today show, nurse Haley Bradshaw, who is expecting her second child, said: “We disagreed. But we help each other.” Two of the babies have already been born and three more are expected in early July.
It’s not a US record, though: As recently as 2019, 36 nurses at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Missouri gave birth to their babies within a year.
