May 9, the date on which Russia celebrates victory in World War II, has become the subject of speculation this year.
In addition to expectations about the possible declaration of war, categorically denied by the Kremlin, Putin is expected to give the Russians a big win in this contest, and there has been speculation that it could be the takeover of the Azovstal steel plant, the latest redoubt of the Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol.
Fears of this possibility have increased following the announcement the day before by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, Iryna Vereshchuk, of the end of the evacuation of civilian refugees in Asovstal, which would leave the Russian military’s hands free for a final strike.
The aim, according to Kiev, would be to exterminate the defenders of the steel mill and organize a parade in Mariupol, dedicated to the Day of Victory over Nazism.
