On Tuesday, the emergency services in the Tyrolean Pitztal were still feverishly searching for a 46-year-old who was probably buried on Saturday by a huge avalanche under the Rappenkopf in the municipality of St. Leonhard, the “Krone” reported.
About 70 emergency services from several local mountain rescue groups and several avalanche dogs resumed the search on Tuesday. Several helicopters and the Alpine police were also in action. The search had to be canceled on Saturday, Sunday and Monday without success because the avalanche danger simply became too great for the emergency services.
According to the police, it should be assumed that a person has been buried there. A 46-year-old local man is missing. He is said to have been traveling alone on Saturday around 8:30 am in the direction of Arzler Alm or Rappenkopf, as the police describe it.
Tourists alerted the emergency services
The gigantic avalanche occurred on Saturday under the Rappenkopf at an altitude of about 2,200 meters. A tour rider discovered the avalanche cone, which was about 1,000 meters long and 300 meters wide, around noon and reported it to police because there was a climbing path leading to it.
