Coast Guard on Duty – Philippines: Ferry carrying 120 passengers in flames

Date:

A Philippine ferry with 120 passengers and crew on board caught fire at sea on Sunday. A Coast Guard vessel is on duty to extinguish the flames and rescue those on board.

The ferry was en route from Siquijor to Bohol when it suddenly caught fire. The Coast Guard has released photos of the ship showing flames and smoke on board.

The rescue operation is underway, but it is not yet clear how many passengers have been rescued. In addition to the Coast Guard, other boats are also assisting in the operation, the media reported. A boat with a water cannon would try to contain the fire.

Frequent ferry accidents in the Philippines
Shipping is part of everyday life in the Philippines. The archipelago consists of more than 7000 islands. Accidents are common due to inadequate safety standards and overcrowding. The Southeast Asian country’s worst peacetime shipping disaster occurred in 1987, when a ferry collided with a tanker. Then more than 4000 people died.
