The family of the late former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wants to continue to financially support his ruling party Forza Italia. She now announced this in a broadcast. According to media reports, the party’s debts currently amount to around 100 million euros.
After the death of Silvio Berlusconi, Forza Italia, which the former prime minister founded exactly thirty years ago, is having financial difficulties. The party’s treasurer, Fabio Roscioli, has already contacted the banks to secure the finances. According to media reports, Forza Italia has debts of around 100 million euros.
The former prime minister’s party, which has supported Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet since 2022, has been in trouble for some time. According to surveys, it receives only eight percent of the votes and has to fight with competition from the right – Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini’s alliance partner Lega and Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (Fdl – Fratteli d’Italia). A strategy for the parliamentary elections next June is currently being discussed.
Berlusconi feared a shift to the left
On January 26, 1994, the big businessman Berlusconi surprisingly announced his entry into politics at the head of a new liberal-conservative party. In doing so, he caused a political earthquake that no one expected. Politicians had been discredited by a corruption scandal, causing Berlusconi to fear a shift to the left. He said at the time that he had to enter politics himself to avert the danger that ‘communists’ would take over the leadership of Italy.
In his television speech he used terms such as freedom, individual, family, Catholic faith and the free development of the personality. The parliamentary elections in the same year were won by a centre-right alliance around Berlusconi, who became prime minister. Until 2011, he headed a total of four governments. The politician died on June 12 at the age of 86 (see video above).
