“Break the Law!” – Activists: Airports paralyzed, let’s move on now

Date:

The climate protest group “Last Generation” is planning nationwide disruptive actions in Germany on Friday. The reason for this is the federal government’s inadequate use of less climate-damaging greenhouse gases, especially in transportation, as a spokesman in Berlin explained. It was not until Thursday that climate stickers temporarily paralyzed two airports.

On Friday morning, numerous protests took place, for example in Berlin, Braunschweig, Dresden, Freiburg, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg, Potsdam and Ulm.

Blockades planned in 26 cities
In the German capital, several people had clung to the asphalt at the Siegessäule.

The climate stickers say they want to paralyze car traffic in 26 cities.

“We’re Breaking the Law”
During a blockade in Dresden, the activists provoked with a banner. Inscription: “We are breaking the law”, which means in particular the law on climate protection.

They wore masks depicting members of the federal government – such as Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics Minister Robert Habeck or Transport Minister Volker Wissing.

Serious traffic accident in Nuremberg
In Nuremberg, the activists occupied three traffic junctions. The police quickly lifted the blockades. But due to a traffic jam, a serious rear-end collision occurred. A driver (31) apparently overlooked the end of the traffic jam and collided with his vehicle against a lorry. The car was pushed under the trailer almost halfway. The driver was seriously injured and is in a life-threatening condition, according to “North Bavaria”. He was taken to a hospital.

On Thursday morning, activists demolished the runways of Düsseldorf and Hamburg airports without permission and paralyzed air traffic with blockades in the middle of the holiday period.

Climate protests since early 2022
The “Last Generation” alliance has been blocking major roads in many cities since early 2022 and calls for more measures to protect the climate. In Berlin alone, there are nearly 2,000 judicial investigations against blockers. The group is asking the German government to come up with a plan to meet the international target of 1.5 degrees, which aims to avoid the worst effects of global warming.

The alliance also wants a social council to plan the end of the use of fossil fuels such as oil, coal or gas in Germany by 2030. A maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour on highways and a permanent ticket of nine euros are also required.
