Bavaria is now tightening controls in the area near the border with the Czech Republic and Austria. In August, the riot police will support the Bavarian border police with additional units, especially in manhunt checks. The emphasis is mainly on measures against illegal migration and people smuggling.
According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU), up to 50 Border Police riot police officers would be assigned to priority checks every week. The focus is on “combating illegal migration and smuggling,” explains Herrmann.
In recent years, the Free State has significantly strengthened its border police. By 2025, the number of jobs must increase from the current 820 to more than a thousand.
Number of drags increases
Since March, groups of more than ten people have been dragged along the German-Austrian border. The migrants are mainly smuggled into Bavaria in trucks and vans. The focus is currently on the areas of Passau, Simbach am Inn and Burghausen. Herrmann stressed that since October last year, the Border Police, with the support of the riot police, has stepped up its search for veils in the border area.
„Inhuman smuggling networks“: Danger to life due to locks
It’s about “breaking down the inhuman smuggling networks,” he explained. Out of sheer greed for profit, people would be crammed into a very small space. “For those who have been smuggled, this can quickly become life-threatening, especially with the high temperatures in the summer,” Herrmann warned.
