The first prototype was completed in 1945 and series production began in the late 1940s: the Russian T-54 and its successor, the T-55, formed the backbone of the Soviet tank army in the 1960s and 1970s. Now Russia has sent the old tanks to war in Ukraine. There, however, the T-54 and T-55 are not necessarily used in tank battles.
Weighing in at 36 tons, the 70-year-old Soviet tanks are relatively small, and their 100-millimeter gun and 520-horsepower diesel engine are out of date. Given the large losses of modern equipment, Russia now increasingly relies on the old tanks in its offensive war against neighboring Ukraine. And Putin’s forces seem to have developed a tactic for which the expendable tanks are perfectly suited.
