The work for the central Matura was a little better this year at the AHS than last year, but there were more fives in the vocational training (BHS), especially in math. The good news: after recording the annual figures and the compensatory exams, there were hardly any “unsatisfactory” left, just like in previous years.
Data from the Department of Education shows: For math on the AHS this year, nearly eight percent scored a five on the exam. In 2022 it was twelve percent. The AHS and BHS high school graduates did slightly worse in English. There it was seven percent ‘unsatisfactory’ at the AHS, at the BHS at eleven percent. In German, six percent of the work at the AHS was assessed negatively (2022: seven percent), at the BHS, just like last year, eight percent.
Five rate again significantly lower
As always, the mark of five in the Matura certificate is significantly lower. As in previous years, the annual figure was included in the final figure. So if you got at least a three on the final certificate and at least 30 percent of the marks on the written exam, you got a four – or even a three – on your Matura certificate despite the negative exam grade.
As if that were not enough, the negative mark in the so-called compensation exams could be corrected at the beginning of June. In the end, therefore, only about one percent of the students of German, mathematics or English at the AHS failed the Matura.
At the BHS, one percent remained negative in German and two percent each in English and math. This is about the same as previous years – only in Maths the final grade of five in the AHS was slightly lower this year, in contrast in the BHS it was slightly higher in English.
Worse math scores at BHS
The poorer math results on the BHS are also reflected in the top figures: this year only 6.4 percent of BHS students achieved an A in maths – in 2022 that was more than double, namely 13.5 percent. However, the results for the other subjects and for the AHS were about the same as last year. At the BHS, just like last year, 17 percent had a first in their Matura certificate in German and 21 percent in English (2022: 23 percent). At the AHS this year, just like last year, 23 percent achieved a first in German, 26 percent a first in English (2022: 30 percent) and 21 percent a ‘very good’ in math (2022: 18.5 percent ).
This is what the figures looked like in a comparison of the federal states
When comparing the Länder, there were hardly any differences in the “unsatisfactory”: at the AHS, only the students in Salzburg had a dropout rate of more than two percent in mathematics, at the BHS, Salzburg again stood out in English and Vorarlberg in mathematics with slightly higher fives.
Conversely, at the AHS, Styria excelled with the most in German (27 percent) and Burgenland with the most “very good” in English and math (28 percent each). At the BHS, most top scores were in German in Carinthia (21 percent), in English in Styria (25 percent) and in mathematics in Upper Austria (8 percent).
