The topic of abortion is polarizing – in the US, in London and also in Tyrol! The Catholic association “Youth for Life” has now handed over a petition to provincial councilor Cornelia Hagele. 6,800 Tyroleans have signed against an “abortion on sick leave”.
Last December, an invitation drifted through some 230,000 Tyrolean mailboxes. The sender was the Catholic anti-abortion association “Youth for Life”, which called for a demonstration on January 14 in Innsbruck. On the other hand, they also called for a petition to be signed. The demand: no abortions in Tyrolean clinics. For context: The program of the state government allowed an expansion of the offer. In Tyrol, only one doctor currently performs abortions.
Back to the petition: Via social media, “Youth for life” now announced the handing over of the signatures – 6800 pieces – to health LR Hagele. When asked, Hagele said that in principle “every petition should be taken seriously”. It would be clear that no woman would carelessly have an abortion. However, abortion should not be considered an alternative to contraception. Women’s right to decide about their own bodies must be “untouched”.
Two additional doctors are on call
When asked whether the supply will actually be increased in the near future by two GPs in training, as is rumored, Hagele is reluctant. Final votes have yet to be held on this issue. “It could be,” they say. It does not seem to bother Hagele that it is a strictly religious association that tries to influence health policy. Opposing opinions must be respected. She therefore had an “extensive exchange” with “Youth for Life”.
