The rescue mission for the missing mini-submarine in the Atlantic Ocean continues. It is a desperate race against time, according to calculations the five “Titanic” adventurers should no longer have oxygen on board. Tragic detail: the wife of the missing OceanGate boss aboard the “Titan” is a descendant of two well-known “Titanic” victims who were memorialized in the film by James Cameron.
According to the New York Times, the wife of the missing company executive on board is the great-great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Straus, a multimillion-dollar New York couple who perished in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
On April 10, 1912, the two boarded the Titanic as first-class passengers, having previously spent several weeks in the South of France. The couple normally traveled on German ships, but they had heard of the modern luxury liner and decided to take part in the prestigious maiden voyage.
When the ship collided with an iceberg just before midnight on April 14, the couple wanted to board a lifeboat. However, men were not allowed in the far too few lifeboats. Isidor was offered to make an exception for him as he was an old man, but he refused. “My great-grandfather said, ‘No. Until I see every woman and child aboard this ship in a lifeboat, I’m not getting in a lifeboat myself,'” his biographer Paul A. Kurzman said in 2017 on The Today Show .
Ida then refused to leave her husband. She put her maid Ellen Bird in the boat and gave her her fur coat against the cold. She wouldn’t need him anymore, she remarked.
Isidor, who co-owned the famous department store chain Macy’s, and his wife inspired that iconic scene in James Cameron’s movie drama “Titanic”, which is probably known to every fan and causes goosebumps (see photo below). In fact, this has never happened. According to their maid, a wave tossed the two into the sea. Isidor’s body was found a few weeks after the accident and the Atlantic has not released Ida’s.
Wendy Rush, the wife of onboard OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, is related to one of Strauss’s daughters on her father’s side, Joan Adler, executive director of the Straus Historical Society, told The New York Times. Wendy Rush is OceanGate’s Director of Communications and a member of the Expedition Team. She has been married to the 61-year-old since 1986.
Researcher Paul-Henri Nargeolet (77) is also on board the Titan. Known as “Monsieur Titanic”, the Frenchman is considered one of the leading experts on the luxury liner wreck. Other prisoners include British adventurer Hamish Harding (58) and British-Pakistani business adviser Shahzada Dawood (48) and his 19-year-old son Suleman.
More than three days after the submarine disappeared near the wreckage of the “Titanic” in the North Atlantic, hopes of survival are fading. If “Titan” is still intact, the oxygen should have run out by now…
