Many minors – 145 migrants rescued from Greek island

Date:

Greek border guards have rescued 145 migrants from a small island in the Evros River. Many of them were minors, most of whom were from Iraq, a spokesman said Thursday.

People smugglers drove past Turkish border guards to the island, which belongs to Greece. Gangs keep promising people that they will then take them from Greece to Western and Central Europe. They often pay many thousands of euros for this.

“The migrants are doing well,” a border guard spokesman told state radio on Thursday. After being rescued, they would receive medical care and be taken to a camp to be registered. About 7,000 migrants have arrived in Greece from Turkey since the beginning of the year, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It is believed that there were actually many more.

117 migrants arrived in Italy
The Spanish NGO ship “Open Arms” arrived in Italy on Wednesday evening with 117 migrants on board. They come from Libya, Eritrea and Sudan. As of June 17, people had already been rescued in the Central Mediterranean, including 43 unaccompanied minors and a three-year-old girl with her parents.

The migrants arrived in the port of the Tuscan city of Livorno. Another rescue ship is currently sailing towards Salerno with 172 people. More than 55,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of the year. This is a significant increase compared to last year. The most common countries of origin in the first months were Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Guinea and Egypt.
