The Council of State of Trentino has postponed the decision on the fate of the problem bear JJ4 to July 13. The animal had killed a 26-year-old jogger in early April. As a result, a debate broke out in Italy and other European countries about the coexistence of bears and humans.
Many protested the initial plans to kill. Animal rights activists repeatedly call for public awareness or the establishment of wildlife corridors. Animal rights organization LAV filed a request to postpone the decision on the fate of the bear in court and proposed to take her to a protected area in Romania. “We are ready to start laying JJ4 immediately,” said LAV president Massimo Vitturi.
Another bear responsible for the death?
After the fatal attack on a jogger on April 4, the animal was captured and taken to a secure game reserve in the region. According to a report prepared by animal rights activists, the 26-year-old man was not killed by JJ4, but by a male bear. This should be apparent from the distance between the fangs in the bite marks.
JJ4 is the sister of the problem bear Bruno, who was murdered in Bavaria in 2006. In 1999, ten bears were transferred from Slovenia to the Trentino region. The brown bears multiplied there and have killed several animals in recent months. The autonomous province of Trento then demanded more freedom in capturing and killing dangerous specimens.
