On Thursday afternoon, a total of 100 helpers from the fire brigade in the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya (Lower Austria) went out to fight a fierce forest fire.
According to the district command, about 10,000 square meters in the market town of Karlstein were on fire. The operation took place in partly impassable terrain. The wind made it difficult to extinguish the fire. The fire could not spread to an adjacent forest area.
Dangerous firefighting
Fire water was brought to the site from a pond by eight tank fire trucks and several vacuum drums from local farmers. The 16,000 liter trailer of the Dobersberg volunteer fire brigade was also present. The helpers had to contend not only with the terrain, but also with the high air temperatures.
Cause of fire unclear
According to the district command, an imminent fire spread has stopped on a forest path. The post-extinguishing work and the fire watch will last until Friday afternoon.
