A large contingent of emergency services was deployed to the Faaker See in Carinthia on Friday evening. A 70-year-old had never come back from swimming. She could only be found dead by rescue divers.
The woman from Villach went swimming in Drobollach around 7.10 pm. When her husband arrived at Lake Faaker around 7:30 p.m., he found her bathing bag, but the 70-year-old was nowhere to be seen. After a brief search, he alerted the police.
The water rescue services Faak am See, Sattendorf, Wernberg and Krumpendorf, the main fire brigade of Villach and the volunteer fire brigade Drobollach started the search with lifeboats. “We have issued a dive alarm. Divers from the water rescue service and the Faak am See fire brigade then went looking for divers,” reports Michael Siter, head of the water rescue service. Divers from the Klagenfurt fire brigade were also present.
The police helicopter was called for assistance. At 9:20 p.m., the missing woman was discovered about 100 feet from shore at a depth of 12 feet, recovered and immediately began CPR. Unfortunately, the emergency doctor had to determine the death of the 70-year-old. It is not yet clear how this accident could have happened.
