Passengers on a car train were detained for 20 hours in South Carolina (US) because the wagons were diverted.
The Amtrak train departed Virginia at 5 p.m. Monday and was scheduled to arrive in Orlando at 10 a.m. the next morning. But as the day progressed, the passengers discovered they were stranded far from the main line outside the rural town of Denmark. The staff informed everyone that there had been a diversion due to an accident on the track.
But when the train was still standing even on Wednesday morning and travelers were not allowed to open the windows, let alone the doors, it came as a shock to many. Some of the 563 passengers panicked and called 911, thinking they had been kidnapped.
The conductor calmed down
A conductor finally asked via a statement: “Stop alerting the police. You have not been kidnapped and we are not holding you hostage! We will give you more information as soon as we have it!” The commuter train did not run again until Wednesday, dropping passengers off in the small town of Sanford, Florida.
