A 41-year-old Slovak entered the oncoming lane with his fully occupied car on the Zillertal state road on Saturday and collided with two oncoming vehicles. Five people were seriously injured. The road was closed to all traffic for an hour and a half.
On Saturday around 2.20 pm, a 49-year-old Austrian drove her car on the B169, in the municipality of Fügen, coming from Fügen into the valley. At the same time, a 41-year-old Slovak drove out of the valley in his car.
Both cars skidded
For unknown reasons, the Slovak drove his car into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the 49-year-old’s car. This caused both vehicles to skid. As the Austrians came to a stop in an adjacent field with their car, the Slovak then collided sideways with an oncoming car belonging to a 20-year-old Austrian.
Several rescue vehicles in service
The 49-year-old was injured to an undetermined degree and was flown by ambulance helicopter to the hospital in Hall in Tirol. The 41-year-old Slovak and his passenger – three Slovaks aged 20, 41 and 47 – were also injured to an undetermined degree and were taken to the hospital in Schwaz by several ambulances. The 20-year-old and her 37-year-old passenger (Austrian) were unharmed.
Road closed for 90 minutes
Significant damage was caused to all three vehicles. A total of 8 vehicles from the Fügen, Hart im Zillertal and Schlitters fire brigades, two ambulances, an ambulance helicopter and three police patrols were deployed. The B169 was closed to all traffic in the vicinity of the accident site for approximately 1½ hours during the accident investigation and clean-up work.
