An 84-year-old woman from Innsbruck almost fell victim to brutal scammers: the perpetrators, posing as police officers, literally broke into the pensioner’s apartment. They were looking for money and valuables. But then the woman’s dog came into play!
The 84-year-old from Innsbruck had already received a phone call from an alleged police officer late on Friday evening. “According to the woman, the caller spoke in Tyrolean dialect and told her that she was in immediate danger and that he wanted to protect her,” the “real” detectives describe.
Questions about top songs and valuables
All in all, the conversation lasted about an hour. The caller also asked for the apartment’s top number and valuables. Forty-five minutes later, the pensioner’s doorbell actually rang.
The woman was literally taken by surprise, two men broke into the apartment – without violence – entered the living room, looked around there and whispered to each other. “Because the situation seemed strange to the 84-year-old, she let her dog out of the next room,” the researchers said.
Intruders got scared
The perpetrators had apparently made the bill without the four-legged friend. They got scared. The dog barked at the intruders and literally chased them out of the apartment.
The next day another attempt at fraud
Although they had fled, they did not want to give up yet. On Friday, the same perpetrator contacted the 84-year-old again – but this time the woman immediately hung up. The two fake agents are between 25 and 30 years old, 1.70 meters tall and slim build. Both have dark hair – they wore dark clothing and black mouth and nose protection. Every police station accepts useful information.
Executive tips
Since such scams occur again and again, the police gives tips and also advises everyone to inform relatives and older acquaintances about this type of scam:
- Stop such conversations immediately. Do not get involved in discussions and make it absolutely clear to your interlocutor that you will not respond to any of the demands/offers.
- Obtain a callback number for the caller.
- Don’t let anyone you don’t know into your house or apartment. Use the intercom to contact us, or use the door security chain or security bar.
- If you receive such a call, report it to the nearest police station.
