Argentine Fernando Martínez retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight title by defeating Filipino Jade Bornea by arbitration decision in the eleventh round, this Saturday in Minneapolis (United States).
Referee Charlie Fitch stopped the fight 29 seconds into the eleventh round due to severe damage to Bornea’s ear caused by Martinez early in the ninth round.
“I got a good look at the ear injury,” Martinez said after the fight through a translator. “I hit him with a left and it exploded. I kept aiming at his ear and that was the end of the fight,” he added.
“It was brutal. Very good,” continued the Argentine. “The strongest boxer wins and that’s me.”
With this victory, Martínez, 31, remains unbeaten with 16 victories, 9 of them before the limit. He won his title 16 months ago against Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines, and retained it in a rematch in October.
Bornea, 28, missed the chance to win his first world title. Now he has 18 wins and one loss.
