Greece goes to the polls for the second time since May, with New Democracy the clear favourite

Date:

The current governing party is aiming for an absolute majority thanks to a seat bonus for the list with the most votes.

In Greece, citizens will again be called to the polls this Sunday reissue of the failed elections in May in which the bonus system for the list with the most votes is reclaimed, a tool through which New Democracy crosses the threshold of absolute majority and thus reconfirm the current government.

on May 21 new democracy already won a solid victory, with more than 40% of the vote. However, the assembly then applied the electoral system approved during the Syriza executive, introducing a purely proportional distribution system, which already anticipated a rerun of the elections if, as eventually happened, the various formations failed to agree about a coalition.

This second appointment applies a new system, already promoted by the current government, of New Democracy. Under this new arrangement, the party with the most votes receives a bounty that fluctuates between 20 and 50 seats, depending on the percentage of votes received, such that only the remaining seats are divided proportionally until the 300 that make up the Council of the Hellenes.

The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakisaims to consolidate a “safe majority”, which would put several deputies above the 150 threshold, although not only the votes collected by New Democracy will be key to this, the polls expect a result similar to May’s, but also how many parties achieve parliamentary representation this sunday.

For this second date, all eyes are once again on the undecidedwhich is about 8%, and in the level of participation, having reached almost 61% in May, although the main imbalance factor may be in the number of parties that manage to enter parliament.

In May, five formations crossed the 3% threshold, but surveys now predict the figure could reach as high as eight, which will not only fragment the composition of Parliament, but will also force the same pie to be shared among more parties. The main leader of the opposition, Alexis Tsiprasalso warned of the risks this possible scenario would entail, aiming to concentrate the vote.
