The EU is increasing funding for the supply of arms and equipment to Ukraine by a further €3.5 billion. The foreign ministers of the member states have taken a corresponding decision. Besides Ukraine, other countries also benefit.
The financial extension is a clear political signal for the EU’s continued commitment to military support to Ukraine and other partners, as stated at the ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.
In concrete terms, the decision increased the financial ceiling for the so-called European Peace Facility to about twelve billion euros.
Other countries also benefit
This EU funding instrument was created before the outbreak of war in Ukraine to provide military support to partner countries and was originally endowed with only around €5 billion for the period 2021-2027.
However, due to the unexpected Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, these resources are far from sufficient. Some 5.6 billion euros have already been released for aid to the Ukrainian armed forces alone. In addition to Ukraine, countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Lebanon and Mauritania also benefit from the money.
Monday’s meeting of EU foreign ministers focused on the weekend’s armed uprising in Russia. Before the meeting, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) said he had no concrete information about the whereabouts of Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. “It’s not a big deal if he disappears from the scene. Putin (Russian President Vladimir, note) should take Prigozhin as an example and turn around,” Schallenberg said.
