Peak of the back wave in mid-August
Although the flow of travel has also shifted to other days of the week in recent years, Saturday remains the most important travel day. “Especially during periods of bad weather, the return flow has shifted to Thursdays in recent years,” said the ÖAMTC. The wave of return travel peaks from mid-August after the “Ferragosto” weekend and during the first two weekends of September, the end of the holidays in western and southern Austria, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

ÖAMTC traffic jam advisor Herbert Thaler is sure: “This year there will be even more going on than last year. Particularly for tunnel group Werfen there will be block handling.”

Delays already over the weekend
However, there is already a risk of traffic jams this weekend: at the start of the holiday season in eastern Austria, Formula 1 takes place in Spielberg and three major concert events in Vienna. On Saturday, traffic will concentrate on “the classic traffic jams to the south”. The ARBÖ expects traffic jams from morning to late afternoon. “Also consider block handling, especially for tunnel portals,” the experts say. If possible, one should “avoid busy days and choose alternative routes”.

Formula 1, “P!nk” & Co. cause waiting times
From June 30 to July 2, tens of thousands of people will travel to the Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Red Rull Ring in Spielfeld, most of them in their own vehicles. “There will be traffic jams all weekend,” say the ARBÖ traffic experts. From June 29 to July 1, the concert performance of the musical “Elisabeth” will take place in Schönbrunn Palace, on July 2 Roland Kaiser will be a guest there. Traffic jams around the castle are very likely. The American star “P!nk” will perform on July 1 and 2 at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, where long waiting times by car can also be expected.
