Alarm at border station – Brenner: Toxic substance leaked from freight train

Date:

A toxic substance escaped from a freight train at the Brenner border station between Tyrol and South Tyrol on Tuesday morning. The fire service finally got the situation under control. The train service had to be stopped.

Around 4 a.m., the fire brigade was alerted to the use of dangerous goods at the border station on the South Tyrolean side. “The emergency services then carried out an investigation and found the escape of the toxic substance toluene at the filling opening of the tank wagon,” says the South Tyrolean Fire Brigade Association.

Leak has been fixed
The toxic substance used in the manufacture of plastics ended up on the ballast bed under the tracks. Equipped with chemical suits and respiratory protection, the firefighters were able to get the situation under control and absorb the leaked amount with binders. The leak in the freight car has been repaired.

Train traffic stopped, road closed
Train traffic was halted for about two hours and reopened around 6:30 a.m., reports the South Tyrolean online portal “stol.it”. The provincial road SS12 was also closed. It is still unclear how the leak started.
