With a four-to-seven majority, the former president would be stripped of all his political rights; however, any member of the Superior Electoral Tribunal can still change their opinion until the end of the trial and the official announcement of the result.
Magistrate Carmen Lúcia Antunes, of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), this Friday found former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro guilty of abuse of power, forming a majority inclined to strip him of all political rights for eight years.
“I want to say that I fully support the rapporteur,” said Antunes at the start of the reading of his vote, joining three others who have already found Bolsonaro guilty of abuse of power in the election campaign that led the progressive Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Antunes has thereby alluded to the vote of judge Benedito Gonçalves, rapporteur of the trial, who asked to convict Bolsonaro for a July 18, 2022 meeting he convened with fifty foreign ambassadors at the official residence of the presidency to disqualify the system. election and casting doubt on the impartiality of the judiciary at a time when he was running for re-election.
Although the majority of four votes out of a total of seven is determined with Judge Antunes’ position, any of the TSE members can still change their mind until the end of the trial and the official announcement of the result.
