Actually, the 2023 climate bonus should compensate for the CO2 tax. This is done by examining the local infrastructure and – depending on the “climate friendliness” of the main residence – there are accordingly staggered payments ranging from 110 to 220 euros. However, not everyone can understand the classification.
The town of Haringsee is located in the wide plain of Marchfeld – although in the so-called “belt” around Vienna the distance to larger cities is still given. That is why the bus is the only option until the next climate-friendly express train connection. Not the ideal conditions to make progress in an environmentally friendly way or to have the best connection in terms of infrastructure.
The mayor of the 1,200-resident community has dared to criticize the allocation key system for this year’s climate bonus. “Compared to urban areas, our buses run at shorter intervals. This can be time consuming. And that’s why many immediately take the car,” Roman Siegmund is annoyed by the “confusing criteria” that determine the height of the climate bonus for each municipality separately this year.
Classification is the same as in larger cities
In comparison, Strasshof an der Nordbahn is also in the same payout class as Haringsee – but you can walk there to reach express trains. The other calculation factor of the bonus, the infrastructure, is also incomprehensible, according to Siegmund: “For groceries you have to drive to Groß Enzersdorf with ten times as many inhabitants. However, the people there are in the same climate bonus class as we are. And we have two small schools and not even a mail partner.”
Sigmund sees that you have to draw the line somewhere. However, he is very often asked by his citizens on the subject: “They see no point in the division. Then I notice that I need an explanation, because I don’t necessarily understand it either…”
