Date:

Mourning Julia Gschnitzer in the Austrian cultural scene. As has only now become known, the grande dame of the Tyrolean theater passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91. The actress was also at home on numerous stages abroad.

Gschnitzer was born on December 21, 1931 in Innsbruck and has been at the Tyrolean State Theater since her debut from 1951 to 1954. Guest appearances brought her to the “Theater für Vorarlberg” in Bregenz. She then moved to Switzerland, where she performed at the Stadtbundtheater in Biel-Solothurn until 1956 and then at the Stadttheater in Bern for three years. Since 1959 she was especially at home on stages in Vienna and Salzburg, but also at the New City Theater in Bozen, so Gschnitzer was on the “boards that mean the world” for more than six decades.

With “A real Viennese does not perish” fame on TV
In television, she gained wide fame as Mrs. Vejvoda in the cult series “A Real Viennese Doesn’t Go Down”. She played the Tyrolean mother of “Nudlaug” Franzi, the boyfriend of Edmund Sackbauer’s daughter Hanni. At the Salzburg Festival, she played the role of “Everyman’s” mother from 2013 to 2016 – it was the end of her stage career. A number of awards and honors marked her career.

Numerous awards
In addition to the Silver Medal of Honor from the City of Vienna, she also received the Karl Skraup Prize and the Grand Medal of Honor from the State of Tyrol. In 1989 Gschnitzer was appointed chamber actress in Vienna. Besides “Mundl”, important television works included Axel Corti’s “Fall Jägerstätter” (1971), Michael Haneke’s “Lemminge” (1979) and “Die Siebtelbauern” (1998). Julia Gschnitzer recently lived in Elsbethen near Salzburg. Last year she was made an honorary citizen there.

At her own request, her funeral will be held with close relatives.
