After their failed uprising in Russia last week, the Wagner mercenary group is building three military camps in Belarus, an ally of Moscow, according to US experts. This is evident from satellite photos taken in mid-June and on Friday.
“New high-resolution satellite images taken on June 30 show at least 303 tents accommodating 20 to 50 people at a former military base in Belarus,” the Washington-based Institute for War Studies (ISW) wrote Friday ( local time) . ) in his daily status report.
At least three Wagner camps in Belarus?
The tents appeared in the past week. There are also reports of plans for two more camps in western Belarus. Over the past week, several independent Russian and Belarusian media have already reported on the construction of at least one military camp in Belarus, intended to house Wagner mercenaries.
Officially, these reports have not yet been confirmed. The leader of an exiled Belarusian guerrilla group told the AP news agency that the camp is located near the town of Assipovichy. Satellite images from June 15 and 30 (see the before and after photos above) show that tents have been set up there over the past week.
Prigozhin in exile in Belarus
Last Saturday, the head of the Wagner troop, Yevgeny Prigozhin, occupied the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and sent a military column towards Moscow. After negotiations, with Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko acting as a mediator, Prigozhin recalled his troops. According to the Kremlin, he was given amnesty and emigration to Belarus in return.
