A massive sinkhole swallowed a football field built over a limestone mine in Illinois on Wednesday, with video footage showing the ground collapsing and the chasm rapidly expanding.
The enormous hole swallowed up a light pole, benches and a thirty-meter long stretch of field where children often play. Parks and Recreation Director Michael Haynes said he was relieved no one was at the site at the time of the accident.
Haynes: “I don’t want to imagine what would have happened if there had been people on the pitch. We were lucky. It’s like something out of a movie, isn’t it? Like a bomb went off!”
Authorities said the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of a limestone mine beneath the park. The affected area around Gordon Moore Park in Alton is being secured and will remain closed for the foreseeable future while inspectors and experts investigate the mine and repairs are carried out.
Safety has the highest priority. They want to work with the city to “resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible and minimize the impact on the community.”
