Yevgeny Prigozhin’s media group is shut down. This was announced by the director of a subsidiary of Patriot Media, who gave no reason. Prigozhin is currently in exile in Belarus.
“I am announcing our decision to close and leave the information space of the country,” Yevgeny Zubarev, head of the news site RIA FAN, said late Saturday night. At the same time, he praised Patriot Media’s performance to date. The company defended both Prigozhin and Putin from opposition attacks, including that of imprisoned Putin critic Alexei Navalny. Patriot Media worked against Navalny and other opposition figures “who were really trying to destroy our country”.
Positive coverage of Wagner mercenaries and Putin
The media conglomerate has long taken a strong nationalist stance and supported Russian President Vladimir Putin. There was also positive coverage of the Wagner mercenaries and Prigozhin himself. It is unknown why the company is now closing.
Prigozhin also runs a large catering company that has provided state facilities for years, as well as so-called troll factories that are used online to try to influence political views and decision-making processes. According to Russian media, one of these troll factories has already been disbanded. Putin also announced a few days ago that the catering company’s finances would be scrutinized.
Wagner not yet suspended
Businessman Prigozhin was already in prison for theft and fraud. In 2014 he founded the Wagner Group. After the mutiny of his mercenaries, Prigozhin reached an agreement with the Russian leadership that he was in exile in Belarus (see video above). His fighters were given the choice of following him, being integrated into the Russian armed forces or retiring to private life. Despite the uprising, the Wagner group is not officially banned.
