This advertising campaign did not go as planned: the Philippines wanted to promote their country with a fantastic commercial. But instead, the video sparked laughter and anger because it didn’t just show images from the Philippines. In it you see: rice terraces in Indonesia, a fisherman in Thailand, the runway of an airport in Switzerland and sand dunes in the United Arab Emirates.
The ministry blames a local PR agency for the accident. On Monday, the authority expressed its “outrage and deep disappointment” and terminated the contract with the agency.
Clip retracted
The video, which lasts about a minute and a half, carries the tagline “Love the Philippines”. Initially, there was great joy over the successful commercial, but then Internet users pointed out that some of the material used was not from the Philippines at all, according to the magazine “Stern”. The clip has retracted.
According to the ministry, the company “blatantly failed to fulfill its obligations under the contract”. The PR agency issued an apology and admitted using foreign material: “Using foreign imagery in an advertising campaign for the Philippines is highly inappropriate and contrary to the objectives of the ministry.”
