Just over every fifth person (21 percent) in Germany would vote for the right-wing populist AfD (Alternative for Germany). This is according to a new survey by the newspaper “Bild”. The CDU/CSU comes out at 25.5 percent.
The SPD comes third with almost every fifth person (19 percent), the Greens at 14.5 percent. According to the survey, the FDP is at 6.5 percent, slightly below that on the left (five percent). According to the INSA survey, only two government options are possible: a coalition of the CDU/CSU, SPD and FDP, which would have just about the majority of the votes, or a coalition of the Union, Greens and FDP, which would get only 46 .5 percent.
“Only two four-party alliances lead to majorities (…). The statics of the political landscape in Germany are changing. Nevertheless, at the moment it would not be possible to govern without and against the Union parties,” said Insa boss Hermann Binkert about the result.
First AfD mayor in Saxony-Anhalt
On Sunday, an AfD candidate became a full-time mayor in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt for the first time. The 42-year-old Hannes Loth received 51.13 percent of the vote in Raguhn-Jeßnitz, the turnout was 61.51 percent. Just a week ago, Robert Stuhlmann, Germany’s first AfD state councilor, was elected in Sonneberg in southern Thuringia.
These electoral victories have further fueled debate over the AfD’s current peak. In surveys across Germany, they score around 20 percent. The state office for the protection of the constitution in Thuringia rates the regional association of the AfD there as “safe right-wing extremism”, the office for the protection of the constitution across Germany classifies the party as a suspected case.
