According to media reports, former US President Donald Trump testified on Wednesday at a defamation trial over rape allegations by author E. Jean Carroll. “We are pleased to record today the affidavit from Donald Trump on behalf of our client E. Jean Carroll. We cannot comment further,” CNN quoted a spokesperson for Kaplan Hecker & Fink, the law firm representing Caroll.
Details on the content and scope of the statement have not been disclosed; Trump’s lawyers initially made no comment. Among other things, Carroll wrote in a book excerpt published in the summer of 2019 that Trump raped her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s. The Republican had already dismissed the allegations in 2019 — including saying, “She’s not my type.”
Trump says it was all fictional
Trump said – as president at the time – that he had never met Carroll. She’s just trying to sell a new book and has accused other men of similar things. Carroll then sued Trump for portraying her as a liar and defaming her. Last week, a New York judge dismissed Trump’s attempt to delay his testimony at the trial. Trump then reiterated that Carroll invented the whole thing. He has been repeatedly accused of sexually assaulting women.
Knowingly made false statements
Trump is embroiled in legal battles on several fronts. His disproven claims of massive fraud in the 2020 presidential election that he lost are now becoming a legal risk to him. A California judge ruled on Wednesday that the ex-president deliberately misrepresented alleged fraud figures in court documents. The judge saw this as sufficient evidence of attempted felony to suspend attorney-client privilege for several emails between Trump and his attorney, John Eastman.
Biden only won by cheating
The lawsuits concern Eastman’s attempts to hold e-mail exchanges with Trump before the US House of Representatives inquiry into the Washington Capitol bombing in January 2021. Trump supporters stormed the House of Representatives at the time – while Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election would be officially sealed there. Trump had previously incited supporters at a White House rally by repeating his false accusations that Biden won only through voter fraud.
Voices of the dead counted
After the election, Trump and his associates filed several dozen lawsuits in the United States over alleged voting irregularities — virtually all of them failed. The judge specifically referred to a lawsuit in Georgia, in which Trump and his lawyers allege, among other things, that 10,315 votes of deceased persons were counted in Fulton County.
A day later, Eastman wrote in an email that Trump was subsequently informed that some of the information was incorrect. Still, Trump and his lawyers “filed the lawsuit with the same incorrect numbers,” the judge noted. And Trump also assured under oath that all information was correct to the best of his knowledge.
“Conspiracy to Deceive the United States”
“The emails show that President Trump knew these specific voter fraud numbers were inaccurate, but continued to disseminate them, both in court documents and to the public,” California judge David Carter wrote. Eastman’s emails were related to a “conspiracy to defraud the United States.” Eastman is now scheduled to submit 33 documents to the Commission of Inquiry by October 28. The commission recently decided to subpoena Trump.
