Tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon in the municipality of St. Johann in Tyrol. An 80-year-old Austrian fell about 50 meters through rocky terrain in the area of the “thief ovens”. Unfortunately, all help came too late for him.
The 80-year-old Austrian and his 71-year-old wife left the hiking parking lot in the Römerhof area shortly after 9:00 am to the Granderalm in St. Johann, which is not maintained. They climbed a marked hiking trail. Around 4:30 PM they returned to the valley via the same route.
Crashed over steep terrain
Shortly before 5 p.m., the man stepped over the right edge of the path into the “thief ovens” area and fell down. It tipped over and fell over partially rocky terrain interspersed with tree stumps.
“The 71-year-old immediately climbed up to the victim, administered first aid and started the rescue chain,” police said. For the man, however, all help came too late. The rescuers could only save him dead.
