While filming a report in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre, an Austrian TV team was attacked by hooded rioters. Among them was ex-ORF journalist Karin Kraml, known to many as Resetarits. On the spot she describes dramatic scenes.
“We were born here on Avenue Pablo Picasso threatened with a cobble while filming masked people and robbed our camera. You know what was the worst? The bystanders applauded. That really touches the heart,” the journalist (61) wrote on Twitter on Saturday.
Robbed in broad daylight
The incident happened in broad daylight, Kraml and her cameraman were unharmed. Protests ignited in Nanterre after 17-year-old Nahel M. was shot dead by a police officer after allegedly chasing police. Since then, France has been rocked by a wave of violence, with hundreds arrested and injured every night.
Nanterre is one of the infamous “Banlieues”, the suburbs of Paris, which are mainly home to low-income people and migrants. Crime is high and drugs are openly traded. Karin Kraml was on site with a team to take a picture of the situation. Quite risky – even the French police hardly dare to enter the said rooms.
The anxiety seems to be easing
However, after days of unrest, the situation in France should slowly calm down. According to the Interior Ministry, there were 49 arrests at midnight on Monday night – significantly less than at this time in previous nights.
This time there were riots again, for example in Lyon, where the police used tear gas against an extreme right-wing group. Judging by the violent unrest of recent days with photos of hundreds of burning cars and buildings and sometimes more than 1000 arrests in the night, it remained relatively quiet.
