A man in Germany was sentenced to a fine of 1,600 euros for attacking and injuring a member of the German Green Party. The pensioner must also pay compensation of 600 euros.
As reported, 66-year-old MP Marie Kollenrott attacked and injured her during an election campaign in Lower Saxony at the end of May (see video above). According to his own statements, Kollenrott suffered bruises on his left upper arm and scratches on his right upper arm, some of which still hurt ten days after the crime. The politician also stated that she had done poorly in the days following the incident and that the incident would likely cause her concern at future campaign events.
Suspect wants DNA testing
During the trial on Monday, the state parliamentarian appeared tense. The suspect followed the trial largely disinterestedly and denied the crime. The accusations were “just nonsense”, he told the Göttingen court. If he touched the politician, he apologizes. He also wants to wait for a DNA test that shows that he did not touch the MP.
However, the judge considered it proven that the former owner of a landscaping company hit the 39-year-old several times in the upper arm at the end of May. Previously he allegedly insulted her with “Dirty pack, you green people”. When the politician wanted to confront him, he immediately harassed her, hit her and then walked away from her. When he noticed Kollenrott taking pictures of him, he attacked her again until people intervened. Two witnesses confirmed this.
Conviction for bodily harm and insult
The 66-year-old was convicted of two assaults and one of insults. He must pay a fine of 1,600 euros and 600 euros in compensation. The verdict is not yet legally binding. The convict had already been convicted in the past for the use of Nazi symbols.
