The summer games of Perchtoldsdorf in the Mödling district show a classic of world literature starring Gregor Seberg and Lukas Spisser – repackaged by Jakob Nolte. Unfortunately not a very happy venture.
Under the direction of neo-director Alexander Paul Kubelka (director), the Summer Games Perchtoldsdorf (Lower Austria) bring Jakob Nolte’s “Don Quijote”, based on the novel by Cervantes, to the stage in the courtyard. The artistic director chooses a piece of world literature for the debut, has Nolte shorten the work to a summery, light two hours and immediately reinterprets it. What was intended as a trick, however, often leaves the viewer stuck in absurdity. Because the “game within a game” makes Don Quixote the heroic archetype of a confused “dreamer”. “I can be whoever I want, every day,” he says exemplarily. Because in reality, only the others who remain in long standing standards are responsible for his misery.
