A rear-end collision involving an Italian truck driver (64) caused a fatal chain reaction on the Brenner highway on Tuesday: two semi-trailers caught fire. These were completely destroyed, the road was severely damaged and had to be repaired during a night operation. The Italian was slightly injured.
Around 9:40 am on Tuesday, a 26-year-old Czech man was driving a tractor-trailer with a trailer on the A13 heading north. At Matrei am Brenner he had to stop because of traffic. Behind them, first a 54-year-old Ukrainian and then a 46-year-old Romanian braked their articulated vehicles and trailer.
Collision with truck
A 64-year-old Italian man was unable to stop the semi-trailer he was driving for unknown reasons, collided with the 46-year-old Romanian’s semi-trailer and came to a stop on its left. The impact pushed the stationary semi-trailers together. As a result of the collision, the semi-trailer truck driven by the Italian and the semi-trailer truck driven by the Romanian initially caught fire and eventually caught fire.
Huge damage to the road
The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade at 10.45 am. The 64-year-old Italian suffered minor injuries in the accident. The other people involved were unharmed. The tractor-trailers that caught fire sustained significant damage. There was minor damage to the two other tractors involved. There was serious damage to road facilities.
First total closure, then one lane
Shortly after 11 a.m., single-lane traffic was established on the first southbound lane and the lane closure was lifted. After removing the concrete barriers on the southbound carriageway, a northbound single-lane traffic route was constructed and finally opened at 12:49 p.m. There were kilometers of truck traffic jams in the vicinity of the Brenner motorway A13 and the Inntal motorway A12. The end of the cleaning and rescue work at the accident site is not foreseeable.
Special companies on site
The fire itself caused extensive damage to the roads. That evening, specialist companies on site started removing the damaged road. One lane remained open in both directions until late at night. With an optimal workflow, highway company Asfinag assumes that two lanes in each direction will be available in this area again from Wednesday morning.
The following people were in action: FFW Matrei am Brenner with five vehicles and 25 men, FFW Steinach am Brenner with two vehicles and four men, BFI Innsbruck with seven vehicles and 17 men, Red Cross with three ambulances, an emergency vehicle and an operations manager and several police patrols.
