The Netherlands is struggling with enormous traffic problems after heavy storms. Hundreds of flights had to be canceled at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on Wednesday, train traffic in the north of the country was paralyzed and trams derailed in the storm.
The chaos is especially great at Schiphol, one of the most important hubs in European air traffic. 300 flights have been canceled there, countless passengers are stuck.
Trees fell on the highway
With wind speeds of up to 140 km/h, trees fell on roads and highways, creating life-threatening situations. A tram derailed in Amsterdam and rail operator NS halted all train services in the north.
The weather service issued the highest warning level for large parts of the country. People were asked to stay in their homes.
“Poly” moves on to Germany
The storm “Poly” is also expected in Germany on Wednesday. The German weather service warns of storms in parts of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Thunderstorms, showers and gusts are expected further south.
