A 39-year-old hiker from the Dead Mountains in Upper Austria was rescued just seven hours after her injury on Wednesday. Two rescue helicopters had to turn off because of the weather.
The accident happened on the penultimate stage: five friends from Prague of about the same age went on a multi-day mountain trip over the Dead Mountains. On Wednesday morning they started their penultimate route to the Ebenseer-Hochkogelhaus. It happened about half way through.
The 39-year-old Czech hiker fell and hit a rock with her right knee. She couldn’t go on.
No cell phone reception
Her companions’ mobile phones had no reception at the scene of the accident. So the hut keeper of the nearest Hochkogel hut had to alert the emergency services – but more than two hours had passed by then. And then two rescue helicopters had to abandon their rescue attempt because of the weather.
Spectacular flight
Meanwhile, the Ebensee mountain rescue team prepared a complex operation. About three hours after the alarm was sounded, the mountain rescuers and an alpine policeman arrived near the injured. The weather window was favourable: between two storm fronts, the emergency helicopter was again alerted and instructed by the mountain rescue service. During a spectacular two-lap flight, the 39-year-old and her two remaining friends were finally picked up by the helicopter.
About seven hours after her injury, the hiker arrived at the Hochkogelhaus, from where she was flown to the hospital in Bad Ischl. The laborious operation was not completed until shortly before 11 p.m.
