Abuse of Office – Accident by Vucic Friend: Arrest for Police Officer

Date:

After a traffic accident caused by one of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s best friends in March, a policewoman was sentenced to 30 days in jail on Wednesday evening. Katarina Petrovic is accused of abuse of office because, according to media reports, she passed on the police report on the traffic accident to the top opposition official Marinika Tepic in mid-June.

According to the report, Nikola Petrovic, friend of the president and former head of the state electricity transmission system Elektromreza, was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time of the accident in Belgrade’s noble district of Dedinj.

Prosecutor is silent
The Belgrade public prosecutor’s office responsible for the accident has not yet publicly commented on the matter. It is unclear whether a trial has been started against Nikola Petrovic.

Tepic stated that he had previously received the same information from other sources and described the arrested policewoman in a television interview with the TV channel “N1” on Wednesday as a “heroine” and “whistleblower”.

In parliament, she asked Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic a question about the traffic accident. Two people suffered minor injuries. According to statements by the policewoman’s lawyer, Petrovic’s case does not constitute abuse of office, but “a kind of violation of disciplinary rules”.

Pro-Western opposition parties, which have been organizing protest rallies under the banner of “Serbia against violence” in Belgrade and other places in Serbia since early May, are now describing the arrest of the police officer as another case of violence.
