The ship of the NGO Open Arms has saved 300 migrants in just 24 hours in several operations, and is now on its way to the port of Brindisi, in the Apulia region (southern Italy), where the Italian authorities have given permission to disembark.
“After a complicated day of operations coordinated by the Italian authorities, the Open Arms heads to the port of brindisiwhere it will arrive on Sunday afternoon,” the NGO reported on its social networks today.
According to Open Arms, “there are 300 people on board, many unaccompanied minorstwo pregnant women and a five-year-old child.
This is one of the toughest days for the NGO which left a few days ago on what is its 101st rescue mission as it had to rescue six ships in a matter of hours.
By Thursday morning he had located the first of these barges, wooden and floatingwith about a hundred people on board, including 9 women and 15 unaccompanied minors.
According to the NGO, the group left Libya three days ago and its members are from there Eritrea, Sudan, Syria and Ethiopia.
Shortly afterwards, he rescued the 17 migrants from another boat in appalling condition, including a woman with health problems.
According to data updated by the Interior Ministry up to July 5, 66,741 migrants have arrived on the Italian coast so far this year, compared to 29,670 in the same period last year.
