According to British military experts, the Russian occupying army in Ukraine has hardly any reserves to strengthen the sector around the city of Bakhmut, despite fierce fighting. US experts also write about the significant progress made by the Ukrainian army.
Fighting around Bakhmut over the past seven days was once again among the fiercest on the entire front, having temporarily died down in June. This is evident from the daily intelligence report of the Ministry of Defense in London on Saturday.
“Russian defenders are most likely struggling with low morale, irregulars and limited ability to find and hit Ukrainian artillery,” the statement said. However, the Russian leadership considers it politically unacceptable to give up Bakhmut, which was one of the few Russian territorial gains in the past twelve months.
The American Institute for War Studies (ISW) in Washington also wrote in its most recent report that Ukrainian forces had made significant progress in their counter-offensive in Bakhmut. They are also continuing operations in at least three other front sectors, sources said.
ISW: Focus on Southern Ukraine
Footage showed the Ukrainians making significant tactical gains near the village of Jahidne, two kilometers north of Bakhmut. In addition, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces were conducting offensive operations north and south of Bakhmut.
The Russian army appears to have moved its entire eastern battlegroup to southern Ukraine. This suggests that the Russian defense lines in the south are vulnerable. “Russian positions in southern Ukraine, while strong, are not impregnable,” the ISW wrote.
