According to Russian sources, traffic on the Crimean Bridge, which connects Russia’s Krasnodar region to the annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, has come to a standstill due to an “emergency”. Sources from the Ukrainian port of Kerch report two explosions, reportedly killing people.
Russia-appointed Governor Sergei Aksyonov spoke of an incident on the bridge’s 145th pier, but he has yet to reveal any further details. The law enforcement authorities and all responsible departments are in action. Measures would be taken to calm the situation. Aksyonov urged residents to remain calm. Residents of the region and tourists must choose an alternative land route through the Russian-occupied regions of southern Ukraine for security reasons.
The Russian Telegram channel Gray Zone, which is linked to the mercenary group Wagner, reports two attacks on the Crimean bridge. The images published on the channel show at least one damaged bridge section.
Married couple from Belgorod died
According to the Telegram channels “Shot” and “Baza”, a couple from the Russian city of Belgorod died in a car on the bridge.
Ukraine threatened to attack
In the past, Ukraine had repeatedly threatened attacks on the 19-kilometer-long Kerch Bridge, a key supply and landing route for Russian troops in Crimea. In October 2022, the bridge was severely damaged in an explosion, but was later repaired. At the end of May, the Ukrainian secret service admitted involvement in the explosion for the first time.
Many Russian vacationers
Kiev has announced its intention to retake Crimea. According to media reports from Russia, despite the tense security situation and lengthy checks, Russian holidaymakers are once again being lured en masse to the peninsula, which holidaymakers can only reach by train or car.
