Can be a burden – Archbishop finds the ‘Our Father’ prayer problematic

Date:

2.1 billion people around the world pray the “Lord’s Prayer”. The text, which dates back to Jesus and is therefore almost 2,000 years old, is now receiving criticism.

“The word father at the beginning of the prayer can be disconcerting to people because of its patriarchal implications,” said Stephen Cottrell, the Anglican Archbishop of York.

“Is Jesus Wrong?”
Not everyone agrees with the reverend: “Is the Archbishop of York saying that Jesus was wrong or that Jesus was pastorally inattentive?” criticizes Chris Sugden, president of the conservative group Anglican Mainstream.

In contrast, the Reverend Christina Rees, a spokesperson for the ordination of women bishops in the Anglican Church, said Cottrell’s thoughts had hit a sore point, particularly with regard to the abuse cases in the Catholic Church.
