Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has again made his participation in the upcoming NATO summit conditional.
“We want all decisions to be made at the summit. In that case, it is clear that I will be there,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with US broadcaster ABC published on Sunday. “I don’t want to go to Vilnius for fun when the decision has already been made,” Zelensky added.
Formal invitation unlikely
At the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Tuesday and Wednesday, the focus will be on how to bring Russia-attacked Ukraine closer to the alliance and what security guarantees can be given after the end of Russia’s war of aggression. However, the formal invitation to NATO desired by Ukraine will probably not materialise.
security guarantees required
“Ukraine should be given clear security guarantees as long as it is not a member of NATO,” Zelenskyy demanded in the ABC interview. “And that is a very important point. Our meeting would only make sense under these circumstances.”
Ukraine still needs to make some reforms to join NATO, White House communications director John Kirby said on Sunday. The country is also at war.
NATO’s focus must therefore be to ensure that Ukraine is successful in its defensive struggle and has the time and space to work on reforms, he also told ABC. The NATO countries would make it clear at their summit that they continue to support the country in the fight against Russia and “that NATO will ultimately lie in Ukraine’s future”.
