In the parliamentary elections in Croatia, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic’s ruling conservatives clearly retained their leading position. This is evident from the first voter surveys immediately after the polling stations closed at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to broadcaster Nova TV, Plenkovic’s Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ) won 58 out of 151 seats, while the left-liberal opposition alliance around President Zoran Milanovic won 44 seats.
Right-wing extremist homeland movement in third place
The right-wing extremist Homeland Movement was the third strongest force with thirteen mandates, followed by the green party Mozemo (We Can) with eleven and the bourgeois Most (Bridge) party with nine mandates. Turnout at the elections was relatively high.
The Coalition crime thriller opens
HDZ vice-chairman Gordan Jandrokovic celebrated the “third clear election victory in a row”. He seemed reluctant on the issue of a possible coalition with the homeland movement, which Prime Minister Plenkovic previously kept at arm’s length. The fact is: the HDZ, which currently governs with the support of minority parties, will need a larger coalition partner than before.
The opposition does not want to give up yet
The left-wing opposition alliance has not yet given up hope for a change of power. It was highlighted that the opposition parties had 82 seats according to the exit polls – more than the previous government camp consisting of HDZ, Croats abroad and representatives of minorities.
